Higher grade Buddies at school

Almost at the end of school k year, I just learn that there's a higher grade buddy assigned to each k kid at school. What is that about? I am so clueless, and my kid never tells me anything about it.

Our kindergarten (this year) had reading buddies who came and read to/with younger kids a few times. Our daughter really liked hers, apparently, but she didn't talk about it much either until I asked.
