| My son worked hard for his 3.4 gpa at his Maryland private school. He didn’t take AP classes. His SAT score was 1300 (650 in both math and verbal). He thinks he wants to major in economics but he would like to explore other options. He is looking for a college with other students near his academic level. He is leaning towards staying within a 4 hour drive but would consider a school across the country. He feels overwhelmed in the city and he feels relaxed in green spacious environments. Do you have suggestions for where to look (both public and private)? |

You really need to talk with the college advisor at his school because its hard to know where a 3.4 will place a kid coming from any one private.
At some privates a 3.4 is quite competitive, at others it is not. At publics it's generally not as competitive. But a public school parent giving suggestions may not be relevant to your kid. |
This is very helpful. Thank you. |

| +1; F&M, maybe Conn college if 4.5 hrs is ok; UMBC; Dickinson; |

I would add St Mary’s, Colgate,
At some schools, being a male applicant can be helpful. I wound look at a few of those schools. Traditionally, that includes places like Vassar, Holy Cross, Kenyon, Skidmore |
| James Madison |
| Really? Vassar, F&M and Skidmore, Bucknell? Do these seem realistic to people? I had thought those were out of reach for my son, who has a higher gpa and higher scores based on Navisnce. |
I knew you were wrong about this so I just checked their most recent admissions stats. HC accepted a higher percentage of female applicants than males. |
Exactly - PP point is schools with traditionally higher number of female applicants often seek male applicants to balance gender ratios. Since HC has more girls, they seek out boys which can give boys an admissions advantage. |
Does your kid go to public school? If so, they probably are out of reach. |
| JMU, University of Delaware, UMBC |
1300 and no APs or equivalent rigor means that Vassar is out of reach. |
| Denison College (6 hour drive) |
| University of Mary Washington |
