Didn't gain any covid weight for a year ... then I did

Anonymous
Dang, it was like, 2020 I was doing fine, doing fine, doing fine, and then in 2021 I gained 15 pounds! My BF even mentioned I looked nubile, but he actually meant Rubensesque.

I mentioned it to my doctor, she told me to exercise more, but didn't even mention reducing food intake.

anyway, I reset my exercise routine (which had gone off the rails in the 2nd year) and started tracking food.

I'm not weighting myself yet, but I'm a couple weeks into watching my food intake, and just off my period, so hoping in another couple of weeks my pants will start to feel roomier.

I'm just here looking for some encouragement.

Why not step on the scale? I weigh myself every morning.

You are not alone. I was at my thinnest in years during covid/2020. Then in 2021 I too gained 15 lbs and have been struggling to take it off/get my eating under control.

I am tracking calories and continuing my strength training routine while being more mindful of physical activity/steps through out the day and adding in a few days of more intentional cardio.

I dont' really get not weighing yourself. It's such an easy way to see if our efforts are working so you can recalibrate as needed

I weigh myself once a season to make sure I’m moving or staying in the right direction. If I’m at my ideal weight, I tend to relax my diet. If I’m always striving to lose 5 lbs, my weight stays down. That’s one reason, the other is I weight train so in reality I weigh more than if I didn’t lift with the same diet. Scales can be discouraging in some scenarios. I base how things are going by how my clothes fit and a mirror, and the 4 times a year weigh in. But I’m always striving to lose 5 lbs.

Great! That works for you. I want to fit into my pants most of all. The scale doesn’t work in the bathroom and dh sleeps in later than I do and since I prefer to look at the scale with the lights on so I can see the numbers I sing with myself very often.

Did she check your thyroid?

Regular thyroid function check on the normal bloodwork. Is there more I should ask for?

This is me, too. The second covid winter was much more isolating and I was more sedentary as a result, and probably comfort-eating. Just sending solidarity.

Same, same. The thing is I don't even have anything to complain about (all extended family survived, we actually did well in real estate, etc.), but man, the pandemic has done a number on my psyche.

I wore comfort clothes 24/7 so it was hard to gauge by fit of clothes. I finally stepped on the scale and of course all the elaborate dinners and wine did add up. I now weigh myself around weekly, not to be obsessive but because I'm not a good judge looking in the mirror.

Yet another one. Solidarity.

And what you are doing DOES NOT work for you, else you would not be seeking advice. Get a new scale. Mine has an led display so it doesn’t matter if is dark.

Regularly weighing yourself is the easiest way to avoid “mysteriously” gaining 15 pounds. That’s just so depressing.

And another. I lost several family members to COVID and frankly diet was not even on my priority list at the time. But I stepped on the scale in January and was the same weight as when I was pregnant with my youngest 5 years ago! I was weight training but had to lock up my diet tight to see results.

DP, but I think it's far more depressing that you fail to understand that your way (daily weigh-ins) don't work for everyone. I have a history of eating disorder and even with all the work I've done, those numbers trigger me hard, much more so than, hey, do my clothes fit.
