Promotional products and the environment

I am getting ready for a family reunion and I am amazed at all of the products that people are coming up with to promote the event. Even the silly t-shirts that are specially printed up...couldn't we just agree to any dark blue shirt that you happen to have? Also, do we need little samples of hand sanitizer with other stuff in baskets?
The same is true of the schools, all the little things that are sold for every event, beach towels, mugs, bags. I have enough mugs and towels to last me until my last day here on earth.
Can we quit this nonsense?
