Schools as early voting sites

Anonymous
Our school is an early voting site, which will be open to the public from 8am to 7pm. I'm not exactly comfortable with this, after all the school shootings. (And because of Covid, not even parents have been allowed inside this year.) Is it realistic to try to get this changed to firehouses (with able-bodied adults), and libraries (less crowded, no kids during the day)?

Not at this point. It has already started.

what's super annoying is that our school has closed the gym an multi purpose room to the entire school....but there is a perfectly good rec center about 200 yards away that they aren't using....

Our school’s attached Rec center (Shepherd) is being used but what’s more annoying is the yard signs in the tree boxed at the kiss and go line. Can’t open car door without bumping into the sign potentially scratching car door. My kid nearly tumbled over one getting out of car today.

Anyhow OP, when the hiring was inside the school before Rec center opened, it was in multi purpose room which was locked to the rest of the school so there wasn’t any additional security concern apart from day to day.

Oh, hell no. I would stop, pick up, and toss those signs to the side.

Yeah I meant for next time around.

The signs at shepherd are out of control.

It's all about pressure. BOE had pressure from politicians to open more sites. The only sites they could expand to in most areas were schools. Schools didn't want voting to happen while kids were still in the building. If enough people put pressure on leadership, it will go back to the way it was.

The way they did it is nonsensical. Takoma Recreation would be ideal for early voting - but it's not being used. SES is being used - while school is in session.

Are you referring to the Takoma Community Center? That is my voting site so maybe you are misinformed.

Deal needs 3 gyms and had to close half of the one it has for voting.

It seems like it'd be easier to push for a primary date after school has ended for the summer.

+1

Or end school earlier and go back earlier in August! This school schedule is terrible.

I think Takoma Rec Center is not being used as an early voting site this year (although it has been one in the last), but if it’s your regular voting site I’m guessing it will be open on Election Day!

Yes please! It’s just as bad next school year.
