How much contact can you expect from breeder in advance?

Paid a $500 deposit and expecting to take a dog home in early July. Searched breeders extensively and felt v comfortable with this particular breeder (specifically avoiding puppy mills as I live in a prime puppy mill state). Expecting to take home a dog early July. I have emailed occasional short questions and have heard back some occasional answers. I would like more info though - birthdate, litter size, how many boys/girls, etc and I’m starting to worry that something isn’t right. No photos or videos yet and take home date is like 3-4 weeks away. My kids so want to see some pictures! I’m trying to not be annoying. So here I’m wondering how much info I should expect to get in advance. I don’t know how hard to push for this stuff because with caring for puppies I can only imagine how busy a breeder is.
Thanks.

Do they do social media? The breeder I follow typically posts information and pictures of litters on their pages till they go off to their homes.

I would be annoyed too. Not one pic and they're 5 weeks old? How do you know which one you're getting.

What breed btw?

So they have a non sketchy website that hasnt been updated since we got our name on the waitlist. Their Facebook page has not been updated with the new puppies. The more I type this the more I am annoyed. I don’t think it is too much to ask for some photos but I don’t want to add any contentiousness into the equation.

Were you promised this litter? We are getting a puppy soon and she posted on social media that the puppies were born and contacted us pretty quickly - a day or two to let us know and then about a week or two in to let us pick our puppy. She did not take money until we picked. She or we talk weekly, sometimes more or less depending on what's going on. She has sent some pictures. This sounds sketchy.

Thanks - that is helpful. I was expecting a birth announcement, info on the litter distribution (boys/girls), and some photos. Instead I feel like I am pulling teeth to get anything. It is starting to feel sketchy. I’ll be disappointed if I lost a $500 deposit, mostly embarrassed that I got taken.

This sounds really sketchy.

This sounds weird. Ours posted updates on instagram and their website. They texted us when the litter was born. Did they give you a date to pick out your pup? We did ours via FaceTime.

P.S. Our havernese breeder has a few puppies. She's been fantastic to work with.

You aren’t asking for too much. Did you pay the deposit before or after the litter was born? If before, I’d need confirmation that there was definitely a puppy for me in this litter. A few photos of the litter are reasonable and should either be posted to their website/Facebook or emailed to you.

I would be fine not knowing which puppy was mine. When I got my pup it wasn’t confirmed until 8 weeks when she did temperament testing and I finally knew which one matched the characteristics I was looking for.

The breeder should be upfront about it. We were sent pictures of each puppy and a video (and she gave us first pick). I wanted a specific gender and color. They are all about similar in personality/temperament but we choose that with the breed. But, you at least had confirmation you'd be getting a puppy. Most puppies go home at 8-10 weeks. OP has no real anything.

We have pictures of our puppy, basically updates - food, etc. and a pick up date. She also was one of the few that would talk to us on the phone when we were originally looking and spent a lot of time talking to us.

If you are taking home a puppy in early July, that litter would have been born already and you should have a communication from the breeder at least communicating basic information about the litter to confirm you will, in fact, receive a dog in a few weeks. Something definitely is not right here.

I heard a ton from my breeder. I got regular videos and pictures….months before I even picked her up.

Don’t worry about being a pest. You paid a deposit. Reach out to the breeder, OP….tell them you need more info/communication.

Op here, thanks again. I’ll call tomorrow and see what info I can get.
