Flying to a tournament- best advice pls!

Anonymous
Hi - looking for any packing tips - DC’s team is flying to a tournament soon. Any good tips for the trip? I’m thinking the bag that they take on to the field becomes kid’s carry-on? Maybe uniforms, cleats and and big water thermos go in there? Anything else that should be in the carry on vs checked luggage? And I guess I just plan to spend a lot on snacks/drinks as we travel instead of packing food to take 😬 Thanks for any suggestions

Anything essential for playing that couldn’t be easily replaced (eg, uniform) should go into carry on.

I’m sending my 15 year old to a baseball thing in Florida solo. I’m going to be sure he has pants, sliding shorts, and glove in his carry on. Unfortunately he’ll have to check the bat. I guess you share with teammates if checked baggage gets lost?

We have a hard catchers bag that zips up and locks, and we bubble wrap the bats and also pack the helmet in that. That bag gets checked. Glove, uniform in carryon suitcase. If it gets lost, can borrow bat and helmet from teammate, and if it is a showcase they usually have a bat salesperson there.

The airlines are so unreliable right now, cancellations, work shortages, that I would take every single thing carry-on. Your team might need to make a quick decision about alternate transportation and no time to get your bags off the plane.

Yes. My son brings uniform, cleats and glove in his carryon. Can always borrow a teammates bat or helmet, or just run to the sporting goods store and buy new ones if it comes to that. Those are easier to replace that uniform or a broken-in glove.

Thanks! I forgot about the cleats. They do allow metal spiked cleats in carryon, don’t they?

Basketball mom here. How do the uniforms get washed? I always pack a medium sized mesh drawstring laundry bag that can serve double duty keeping my DC’s uniform separate if they are collected and washed either by another parent or a coach.

Drawstring laundry bag is helpful anyway to separate out dirty from clean clothes. I tuck in a few drawstring kitchen garbage bags either for trash or wet clothes.

I thought bats had to be put in checked luggage bc they are considered "weapons". Agree that anything vital to play on the field/court be carried on.

Baseball bats aren't allowed as carryons.

For baseball: I bring many pairs of pants (enough for each day) because they get filthy and are a PITA to wash. Also plenty of socks- enough for each day- because those are easy. I pack a bar of “fels naptha” (a detergent bar type thing) and DS washes his own jerseys and slider shorts in the tub or sink and hangs to dry. Super easy, just takes a few minutes. There have been times where there are laundry arrangements, but often we have been on our own.

We do this too with the fels naptha 🙂

And enough baseball pants for the whole tournament is key
