| Former DC resident and I’m bringing my teens to visit. We won’t have a car and will be staying downtown. The air and space museum is closed so I want to take them to Udvar Hazy at Dulles. What is the best way to get there? What a pain in the rear. |
| Car is really the only way |
|
There is no easy way (no public transportation options).
And parking is like $15 (free after 4pm). And you'd be taking I66 to rt29 both are under construction, super congested, and an even bigger mess during rush hour. Sorry Op. Can we suggest any other alternatives? |
| Technically there is public transit - metro to bus - but it would take forever and end up costing almost as much as an uber or taxi for multiple people. It is a great museum, though. Do you have any old friends from when you lived here before that you could ask to go along and drive you or even borrow their car? I would lend a car to a friend from out of town for half a day. |
You can take silver line out to Wiehle, and then the 983 bus, but yeah it's a solid 90 minutes probably. They do have a shuttle to Dulles Airport, which will make it a bit easier when the silver line is opened to Dulles in the fall- shorter bus ride. |
| OK thank you guys. We are meeting friends there who have a car but not enough for all of us. Maybe I’ll rent a car for a day or two |
|
Just take Metro to Wiehle Metro then get an Uber - not difficult at all.
You can take the 983 from Wiehle but it is like 45 minutes each way - definitely worth the extra $20 to just take an Uber. |
| I live near Udvar Hazy so I don’t know process or details, never having to do it myself, but you can look into Metroing somewhere close and then doing an Uber or taxi from there. I just can’t speak to costs. |

Uber?
Also, my car GPS had the wrong address for the Udvar Hazy, and so apparently did a few other cars! We milled around a service road for a while, before I pulled out my phone and was set right. When we went there in mid-April, the onsite McD's was closed, but not the gift shop. |
Why not just Uber.? |
