How many fourth graders are put in the Enriched Literacy Curriculum?

My understanding is that the Enriched Literacy Curriculum is the same curriculum used in the CES and it's for advanced readers. How many fourth graders are put in the Enriched Literacy Curriculum?

In my son's elementary school, it's everyone including ESOL students.

At our school, many kids qualify, but the program isn't available yet.

At our ES, ELC instruction is offered for about 1/3 of the students. They are a separate homeroom; almost all of them are also in compacted math, so it is a kind of a cohort. It works well. Our principal also makes a point of erring on the side of generosity when bringing students into this track in grade 4, which I think is a really good idea.

Our school only offers Benchmark “enrichment.” It’s a joke. My kid is supposedly doing the William & Mary curriculum they use in CES and hasn’t even discussed the book. Maybe ELC is different, but they could also say they cover the same material as CES but not actually do it faithfully. I would certainly take a CES spot if offered. The teachers are experts on how to teach gifted kids.

PP here. I am telling you the truth. Weird, right? Are we the only elementary school who does this? Parents at our school are confused, too.

We're at a school getting ELC next year and our principal said that all students will do ELC, so your school is not alone in that

This is really sad to hear. This curriculum is wonderful, but it’s not suitable for all students, particularly those at or below grade level. It does not set struggling students up for success, and it does not meet the needs of gifted students who need depth and acceleration on their level and will likely be ignored if the teacher is forced to differentiate greatly within the classroom. Mcps is always saying there’s no one size fits all solution, but they are giving principals such wide latitude on curricula that should be offered equally county-wide that it’s creating this horrible situation of haves and have nots based on nothing.

I thought that part of the county didn't even get these programs since they were for rich schools?

Maybe you'd be happier if kids could battle it out for spots like in the Hunger Games?

Check the ELC list. A good number of Title 1 schools already have this program. Every student is not eligible at my child's school. They have 2 classes out of 5.
