What does post-Putin Russia look like? Who is his likely successor?

The man won’t live forever, and he is getting long in the tooth. Are there people molded in his image being groomed to take over after him? Are there names mentioned? Are people like Navalny (not necessarily Navalny himself) more likely to take lower than a Putin supporter?

Nikolai Petrushev. Mede dev is less likely.

Is it a case of no one really knows? No one cares to speculate? I’m hoping that some level of sanity is restored there and the aggression toward Ukraine will end with (or hopefully) before Putin leaves office.

Can you tell me more about them? Are they autocrats like Putin?

Ugh. They look like Putin’s men.

Are people afraid of Russian trolls? The politics in Russia are relevant to what is happening in Ukraine and in the US.

Petrushev has acted as right hand to Putin and reinforces his worst instincts. Medeved briefly replaced Putin but is more or less a puppet with little public or institutional support. Russians love their strongmen and the oligarchs closest to the military will be calling the shots. Look for a hyper nationalist Andropov type not a Gorbachev, Yeltsin or even a Brezhnev.

Most Americans don’t know the first thing about Russian politics.

The Mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin, is another player to watch. He is younger than Petrushev and has close ties to Putin (obviously) and the oligarchs. He understands how to work within the corruption of the system as he served as Deputy PM under Putin and Kremlin chief of Staff to Putin and Medvedev.

Literally the only American people who care who is next in Moscow are sitting at a desk in Langley.

Really the priority is who is shakira or Michael b Jordan going to date next?

Most DCUMers are in the DMV and many work at NGOs, as contractors, have political friends/family, etc. These are not most Americans.

You do realize plenty of people have relatives or friends living/working in Eastern Europe who are watching what’s happening there. Also, despite denials by some, this will impact or will be impacted by Russia’s relationship with another super power. China.

Apres lui, le deluge.

He’s ensured there’s no clear successor so that no one can threaten him. Patrushev has competition and enemies. There’s going to be an ugly power struggle after Putin à la the USSR after Stalin. Patrushev is the modern day Beria. The bull’s eye on his back is too big for him to survive.
