Best suburb for food

Anonymous
We moved to the DMV from San Diego last year and are renting in the Woodmont Triangle area until we find the neighborhood we like enough to buy in. Overall I’ve been pretty disappointed with the food in MoCo. Most of the recommendations I get are for chains… True Food Kitchen comes up a lot, and yah it’s one of the better places around, but we prefer to support local businesses. But the local places don’t seem to have a lot of flavor. The few places that have been good, but not great, are way overpriced for what you actually get. Especially when you compare the food you can get just 5 miles away in DC. Like, Duck Duck Goose is probably good, but they also charge $35 for a burger. Gringos and Mariachis is fine for drinks but the food isn’t good.

So, what’s the best area in the DMV suburbs for great food? It doesn’t have to be fancy or Michelin recognized… but just quality local restaurants.

It depends on what kind of food you’re looking for. As PP said, Rockville, for instance, has lots of great places. Kiin Imm serves amazing Thai. A&J has delicious dim sum. I personally love El Mariachi for fajitas and tres leches cake. Ema Rossi and Gregorio’s for pizza/Italian. We like Kusshi in Pike and Rose for sushi, or Yuraku (in Germantown).

I live in Bethesda and have never recc’d true food to someone.

Have you tried any of the Indian (Virraj, Heritage or Kadhai)?

I think Casa Oaxaca is better than Gringos. We’ve only tried Cubanos a couple times bcs it opened this location during the pandemic but liked it a lot. Tako grill is pretty good too. RIP Chicken on the Run so need to try Don Pollo.

That said it’s true rents are cheaper elsewhere and if you better Thai you should check out Wheaton (although I am usually fine with Sal Thai) and if you want chinese Rockville has some options (although plenty of people like Q by Peter Chang, or Hollywood East for dim sum).

Falls Church/Annandale.

Springfield and Wheaton have a pretty diverse range of good restaurants. Silver Spring, Rockville, and Falls Church would also be on my list.

OP - we love Kiin Imm! Thanks for the sushi recs. I used to eat sushi weekly and I’m still looking for a go-to spot around here. My husband is still searching for his great burger spot. We end up eating Mediterranean a lot… but my favorite casual/not chain Mediterranean is Cafesano in VA.

For your husband, mine likes the burgers at Woodmont Grill in Bethesda and Bucks in CCDC (which might as well be a MD ‘burb).
