My child is in k, and we have a few parents step up as informal classroom parents collect money through venom to get giftcards to our only homeroom teacher. All are voluntarily. I did not participate their Christmas and teacher appreciation classroom collective gifts to my child's homeroom teacher only, instead I did my own sending generous giftcards to not only homeroom teacher, plus special teachers (PE/music/art) and etc at bith christmas & teacher appreciation. My kid is special need kid even though mainstream, I have many teacher/staff on my gift lists. I don't understand why only homeroom teacher is appreciated by their standard.
Now, they are organizing an end of school year giftcard to classroom teacher only. Is end of year school gift necessary because teacher appreciation week was only 1 month ago? And, our homeroom teacher gets a few hundreds of giftcards plus physical gifts at each occasion. |
| It's all voluntary. None of it is necessary. If you don't want to participate, don't. If you want to do something to mark the end of the year with the teacher, a heartfelt note and letter to the principal outlining your appreciation for the teacher would be the best gift. |
| No, winter and teacher appreciation. |
| Yes |
| No |

If it’s a typical indifferent teacher, no I don’t get them anything.
If it’s a good teacher, then I give generously winter and end of year. |

Gosh, please do skimp on an end of the year gift because I’d the hundreds of dollars you’ve already invested in teacher appreciation week, OP.
Good grief, you’re probably being asked to give $5 -$20 …. Is that too much to ask for the person who works their tail off to educate your child? You probably spend that much on coffee and donuts in a day or two. |
I find teachers to be appreciative of whatever you are able to do. We usually do a holiday time gift and will participate in whatever group thing is happening in the Spring - contribute to the TA luncheon, or collection for Gift Cards or whatever. If you have something nice to say about the teacher a thank you note copied to the principal is always a good gift. |
That’s nice. How about a gift card? These teachers are often spending their own money on supplies and aren’t paid they well to begin with. Again, if all parents donate $5 -$20 you can give a generous gift card. Crazy how cheap people are. Why ever do we have a teacher shortage? |

OP here. I don't like to contribute to group giftcard because I know that it is always the parents that plan the event get all credits. I also prefer to add personal note.
I did not participate their Christmas and teacher appreciation classroom collective cash for giftcard to classroom teacher, but I personally send her $100 giftcard on each occasion. Classroom parents did not know about that. I also send other staffs generous giftcards. End of school year gift never crosses my mind. I give them giftcards because my child is special need, and I want them to be more patience and understanding. I don't think they really care much about my child, but I also understand my child is handful. |
Uh…no. They’ll tell the teacher it’s from all the parents, thus all the parents get credit. Do you seriously think the few parents soliciting donations are then passing it off as being only from themselves? |
| Do people typically give something to the related services staff as well? PT, SLP, etc? |
Depends on how engaged they are. Daily Teachers and Paras, sure. The rest may be an hour or two a week. |
