Expectant and Postpartum Moms
| Do you think it would be ok to go whitewater rafting at 11 weeks pregnant? I'm not sure why it wouldn't be ok considering I'll barely be showing so can't imagine much risk . . . |
| Ask your OB but I definitely would not. |
|
I've done the Gauley River during a fall dam release -- Class V+ rapids and ice-cold water. I would not necessarily do that while pregnant -- if you got launched from the raft, it wouldn't be fun.
I've also done the New River in the middle of summer -- Class I-III rapids and warm enough to hop out and swim. I would sign up for that trip in a heartbeat. Keep in mind, though, that you may not be completely over your nausea/exhaustion by then. If you're still feeling sick, I can't think of a worse hell than being on a hot, fishy-smelling river for hours and hours and hours. |
| the motion is the issue. they told me not to go sledding for the same reason. i wasn't even that risk averse during pregnancy (had a glass of wine here and there and didn't give up coffee completely) but i would not do this. |
| Ask the doc, but I don't thik I would do this. |
| I would keep an open mind open until you go and see how you feel. If you're feeling sick and tired, don't go. Bring plenty of water and a hat regardless so you stay hydrated and don't overheat. |
| Have you WW rafted before? It can be seriously rough. More than enough to cause a miscarriage. Similar to horseback riding, etc, I don't think it's advisable. |
| Don't want to start a fight, but if you are used to it and are comfortable you will likely be ok. I rode horses all my life and continued to do so up until i got too big in my 5th month. they only advise against it in case you fall and even then, the risk of miscarraige is really a hypothetical. try and find a documented case where falling off a horse or off a raft caused someone to miscarry. assess your own tolerance for risk and go from there. |
| If this is your first time, I would not. Those rapid can sometimes feel like rollercoasters and the jolting action can cause a miscarriage. |
| is it worth it? |
|
I went WW rafting at 14 weeks. I did fall out of the raft and climbed back in. Was not a big deal for me.
|
| I would not do it. The sport is too rough. You can do water rafting anytime once your baby is born. We can do fun stuff but if it involves risking our baby, please re-consider. |
| my grandma rode on horses during all her 10 pregnancies. if you're used to it why not? |
| Rafting can be very dangerous. I haven't come back from a trip without at least one significant bruise. It's just not worth it. Go canoeing or tubing---something more relaxing! |
| I have been rafting on the Zambezi (rough) and on the Shenadoah (super not-rough). I would not do Zambezi (you wear helmets for a reason!) but would do Shenandoah. |
