Tell me about JTCC tennis

Anonymous
We are thinking of JTCC for my 7 year old DD with the potential intention to go competitive on tennis. DD has been taking tennis lessons here and there, and has always been recognized by coaches as with great potential. We are starting getting serious on tennis and would like to see our options. If you have experience with JTCC or any other tennis program, please share. We are in Gaithersburg/Rockville area. Thanks.

Did you end up going there? If so, how was it?

Still losing. I guess the name brand makes no difference

Going to be real. As a parent of a very competitive player, I would discourage tennis. The cost is huge. There is a ton of travel. The pressure for the players is nuts. There are multiple rankings if your player wants to play in college, and to get them high, you must compete all the time, and most good competition is not in the DMV. If you want in this crazy sport, no need to develop at JTTC when younger. Go local (Pass, JSI, BTA, QO) and throw in a private lesson to develop. Watch out for burnout if your child competes a lot when younger. Be prepared, if your child dominates younger competitions, as soon as puberty hits, the kids who dominate start to fade, and it becomes even more cutthroat. Tournaments are mostly self-governed by kids, and cheating is rampant. Wish my kid stuck with soccer!

Your player must have ended up pretty average

We went to JTCC for about 1.5 years, starting as as a beginner. Our experience is that the people were lovely, they make efforts to foster community, and some of the coaches are excellent. But it's the kind of place where you should already be good before you get there. Their beginner program is just not designed to help kids advance. YMMV.

Our friends daughter is having a good experience there but as the PP said, this girl was already good before she got there and was coming from another local club and moved to become more competitive.

It depends. The coaches like to see motivated kids who work hard. My own kid started tennis very late but feels fully supported and has made great progress over the past few years at JTCC.

I wish. I would have much more money in the bank and time if they were average!
