Moving within MoCO

Anonymous
In late Aug we are moving within MoCo. Any tips? What does MCPS need to transfer student from one MS into another? Is apartment lease agreement enough to get the transfer started?

Yep - lease is enough. Just contact the new school and give them the name of the old school plus your kid’s student is number. The secretaries at both schools got together and handled it from there in our case.

Related question: if I move within MoCo midway through middle or high school, is it possible to get some kind of a waiver so my kid can finish out in the school where they started?

I think you can stay till the end of the year but not after that...unless you forget to tell them about the move and provide transportation.

Do the schools get into logistics of the family situation? We are moving out pre-emptively because we are planning to sell our house but that will take time to organize. Will new or old MS get nosy?

This is the official language:

Students whose families have moved within Montgomery County who wish to continue attending their former home school may request a COSA without demonstrating a unique hardship. Such requests may be considered for the remainder of the current school year only, with the exception that students in Grade 11 or 12 may be granted a COSA to stay through high school graduation.

If you present a lease for a new apartment, they won't care if you haven't sold your old house yet.
