When is the last day you would cook chicken that says “Sell by 5/20”?
When is the last day you would eat cooked chicken if the sell-by date had been 5/20? Have you ever had food poisoning? |
| 5/20 if that. |
| That seems risky for me, but I'd smell it first. I always ditch chicken that smells. |
| Unless your family is on the struggle bus and can’t afford anything else, it’s simple just not worth the risk. Throw it away immediately and use it as an excuse to eat out or grab fast food. |
| Sell by 5/20 should be fine to cook today, if that’s what you’re asking. Open the package and smell it; if it smells off, toss it. If not, cook it today or freeze it. |
| I would use it today. I frequently go past sell by date. Never had food poisoning. Google it - sell by date is not safety related. |

From the Internet:
Your meat is good for 1-2 days maximum after the sell-by date. The sell-by dates labeled on raw chicken essentially benefit the retailers, making it easier for them to determine when to remove the product from the shelf and dispose of it. You are two days past 5/20. How much o you care if you get food poisoning? |
OP isn’t going to get food poisoning from using chicken 2 days past the sell-by date. It would be an issue of quality, if anything. As others have said, use your nose to determine whether food has gone bad, regardless of the date on the package. |
| Fine to cook today. |
