If you shop at Lidl, what are some of their best products that would make simple, easy to cook dinners for a college student? |
College student in a dorm, or in an apartment with a kitchen? |
Kitchen; has the basics (frying pan, pasta pot, broiler) but nothing fancy. Mostly cooking for one this summer. |
They can check out youtube videos. There are lots of people posting recipe videos for specific stores including Lidi. |
any opinions on Lidl's fish selections? |
I literally cannot imagine my parents ever doing this kind of post. Your college student has access to the internet and is an adult. They can make their own food choices. |
Really? You can't imagine asking your parents for ideas between freshman and sophomore year for simple meals to cook? My parents actually helped me a lot when I was in college. I personally knew how to cook, but I knew nothing about household repairs or car maintenance. Well, my son asked me for help. So sue me? |
19 is... kind of.... an adult, but... do you have a 19 year old son by any chance? |
It is SUPER-normal for parents or FIL/MILs to teach their kids and kids-IL their traditional recipes. Favorites and healthy too. I will say Cooks Illustrated/ATK and mealkits like ChefnBox and Gobble are going to be WAY BETTER than the #1 hit on google/youtube as Alphabet doesn't incorporate tastebuds or meat thermometers in the sorting algorithm. HARD disagree with this condescending PP. |
I feel like Trader Joe’s would be better than LIDL for this age group but understand that might not be feasible.
LIDL has good basics and good seasoning. I’d recommend teaching him some basic cooking skills so we can use those. Like, how to roast a chicken. Or how to make chicken parm, etc. LIDL has plenty of pasta and frozen veg too. Definitely get him a meat thermometer. LIDL has frozen meatballs too. He could roast those and throw them on some pasta. Plenty of fresh veg too. I suspect coming up with an easy meal rotation and shopping based on that might be best (cheese and bean or meat quesadilla, tacos with shredded lettuce and guacamole, roasted chicken pieces or breast with olive oil/butter and poultry seasoning, breakfast for lunch, etc.). Also, if you have a crockpot for him, he could throw virtually any red or white meat (maybe not seafood) with some seasoning and broth from a carton and have food for a variety of meals (salads, Sandwiches, etc.). |
It's a grocery store Op.. You treat it like any other grocery store shopping trip. Your college seriously can't buy tortillas and ground beef, or pasta + marinara, or a baguette + meatballs, or the like?
And there's a decent selection of ethnic food in the frozen section that usually changes weekly. Our local Lidl had Greek items not too long ago for example |
Has he ever gone grocery shopping? Or made food for himself?
Have you? - finding it weird that you as a parent need to post asking for tips on what to buy at the store. |
Chicken sausage, sautéed with sliced bell pepper and onion, simmered in jarred pasta sauce and served over rigatoni. |
Is baguette and meatballs a thing? |
^^for college kid, yep. ^^ |
