They count from day of symptoms. So if he was symptomatic on Sunday then today he would be able to end isolation.
I wouldn’t assume the worst.

It depends on when his day 0 started. He could be past day 5 even though he tested on Monday.

Isolation starts on the day of symptoms, not the day you test, and certainly not the day your test results come back in.
