No summer programs this year?

Why aren't there any virtual programs for middle schoolers this year? Only virtual programs that we see are for HS students for students to catch up.
So what about the program for kids who are doing well at their grade levels? None?

There are plenty outside mcps.

Maybe because teachers could use a break.

Indeed!

I believe this year is a return to what happened in summers pre-Covid - summer school targeted to kids who need extra support plus some classes available to high school students.

It was paid for via covid funding. They choose to spend the new funding on the kid museum and bocce ball vs. academics.

Cute. No, it's about a lack of staffing.

Its not lack of staffing. They paid for it last year no issue and found staff.

There was a HUGE issue with staffing last year. Some classes were cut altogether and others were taught by kids still in college. They even had to offer bonuses to lure in enough staff.

Because virtual programs are ineffective at teaching things.

There are for virtual kids. Traditionally summer school is for kids struggling. They used Covid funds the past two summers. Now we get bocce ball and the kid museum.

Virtual has done very well this year. Maybe you are the problem.

Yes, staffing was problematic last year. Someone who worked in the media center “taught” my son’s CS class, absolute waste of time.

Seems like a waste of resources to pay instructors to teach kids already working on grade level, when there are plenty of kids who really need the extra instruction, and teachers are already stretched thin.

Anyway, what would be the point? What would they even teach the kids? They don't need remediation or repetition of material already learned; and if they were to get a jump-start on next year's classes, they'll be totally bored when the class is working on something they already learned in summer school.

If it's just to keep them out of trouble in the summer, look for an online enrichment class like Outschool. Or have them work through Kahn Academy courses if you want something free.
