Looking for more ideas of things to do with my kids this summer

Anonymous
I'm a SAHM and I love summer because I get to have a lot of time with my kids who are normally in school all day. They have a few camps, but we will have about 6 weeks with days to fill. Most of their friends are iin full day camp or leave for the summer. This is what I have so far to let my kids pick from. Anything else that I'm missing that's about an hour drive from DC that might be fun for mid/upper elem?

Mason Neck State Park in Lorton. It’s on the water, so a little cooler, and you can rent boats, if they are over six.

Is there a food bank accepting volunteers? My kid loved helping to stock the shelves. Also, make cookies and drop off at a fire station with a home-made card.

Wow, thats quite a list!

One place our kids love is that spot right before Reagan airport where the planes fly right over. They have an ice cream truck out there sometimes. We go for like an hour or so.

Wow! That's an ambitious list!

Every summer we try to go peach picking once and then spend a day making jam and pies.

Blueberry picking

Kayaking or canoeing from Fletchers Boathouse or the marina (I'm forgetting its name) near Mt. Vernon

Visiting all the libraries your library card works for

They'd love this, thank you. Do you know if you can fish too?

Reasonably close, and often overlooked - Manassas Battlefield Park. A little further afield, but totally doable in a day - Luray Caverns and hikes in the Shenandoah. Still a little further, is Charlottesville.

Day trip to Richmond. Edgar Allen Poe Museum and go to the fine art museum. If you're a history buff and like the civil war there is a really nice tour of the white house of the confederacy. They give an overview of the history of the house and what was going on in richmond during the war.

Mount Vernon, you can also do a Potomac cruise from there. From there add in watching planes that the pp mentioned.

Gettysburg can also be a nice day trip, but I'd look for a day that is cooler than normal.

Go to a minor league game at Frederick Keys or Bowie Baysox Stadium. So much more fun than Nats games.
