My 9th grader said the World History 1 SOL was harder than the practice ones she took in class. She said BIO was hard too. She has not taken Geometry yet. |
She is fine as long as she passes. Do you have reason to believe she failed? If not, she probably passed (it’s a low bar). |
50% is passing
50 F |
Oh they just need 50% to pass? Is that on every SOL? |
I don't know about Elem, but I know that in high school all you need is a 50% to pass any Science, History or Math Sol. |
Our HS hasn't done the 9th grade SOLs. I thought they didn't need World History if they took World Geo last year (APS). |
I thought CAT testing was supposed to assess them with FEWER questions. My highshooler said the tests had more questions than the practice SOLs online. |
50% is not true for math SOLs. It’s a different pass rate every year and teachers don’t know ahead of time. We can only guess based on previously released tests and most data out there is old now. |
That's not how it works with computer assisted. It's about level of question too so you can't just assume if 50% are correct the student passes. |
Can anyone confirm that 9th graders in APS don't need to take the World Hx test? |
If they passed the World Geography Sol they don't need another. I was told this but haven't seen it in writing. |
Is this just an APS thing? |
I think APS might be the only country that gives the World Geo SOL in 8th grade. |
Not well. Bellwether was the EOC writing exam in March. Scores down across the entire state. Many more kids not passing than usual. Presumably will be the same for the others that followed. The tests didn’t change to accommodate the reality of a year of distance/hybrid learning, and if a kid was largely checked out for DL and didn’t immediately get back on the ball when normal school resumed this year, they simply did not have the knowledge to pass. I think one thing people underestimate too though is the stamina isn’t there. Most kids didn’t go in for SOLs last spring since they were optional. School was closed before SOLs in March 2020. So the last time most kids took these tests and were in that testing mindset was spring 2019. Three years. It makes a difference.

It depends on the school. Scores seem typical and like any other year before covid. - another high school teacher |
