Kid is in 6th, in "Advanced English" (like all kids are at this particular school, except ESOL).
My understanding is that there won't be an differentiation until high school. In the meantime (as noted in many previous discussions), the kids don't actually read very many real books anymore, and the writing seems limited. Kid gets A's and high MAPs but that's a lot of people around here. I still don't think she can write very well, and her spelling is awful. What are suggestions for improving her reading and writing skills? Are there any programs (online or in person) you'd recommend for the summer? Also, side note - I can't get her to read anything just for fun anymore. This kid used to read a lot (finished Harry Potter series when she was 9). What to do? |
If money isn't an obstacle then hiring a tutor is the best bet for 1-1 instruction.
Try an Outschool class. Affordable and can target grammar, spelling, etc.
I used www.robertguiseetutoring.com for both kids to great results. Both went to magnet high schools. Kid is in college freshman getting all A’s. More than that, honestly, is that I think they are good writers now.
I like educational magazines for reading practice over the summer.
