can my baby hang out next to me on a blanket on the sofa (while awake, not sleeping)? or is that also a no no? what about on a play mat on the floor next to me?

| We often hung out on the floor together. Can't fall off the floor. |
| I always put my babies on the floor (not on the sofa) because you never know when they're going to roll. But if you have a very puffy sofa, I'd be scared about the suffocation risk too. Floor/play mat always seemed safest to me. |

If baby is awake and you are paying attention to them they can be anywhere, basically.
If they are awake and you are not paying attention, keep them away from choking hazards and put them somewhere they can’t fall off of (because they will absolutely spontaneously start rolling for the first time ever the second you leave them on a bed). If they are asleep, they need to be on their back on a flat, firm surface, with a swaddle or sleep sack if they need it but no other blankets, pillows, bumpers, loveys or positioners of any kind. They can have a pacifier, and in fact it has been linked to lower SIDS risk. It also helps if you are in the same room but you don’t need to supervise them while they sleep, they just use your breathing and heartbeat to help regulate their own. You can sleep or read or binge tv nearby and it’s all equally helpful (but you should sleep 🤣). |
Yes. Of course you can have your baby on the couch with you supervised. Don’t let sids fear stop you from bonding, relaxing and enjoying your baby. |
| Playing on the floor is great and good for the baby. I wouldn’t put my babies on the couch next to me, however. Some babies roll very young and could suffocate or fall off. |
| Babies should never sleep on the couch unless they’re in your arms. Floor mat is okay but why not just put them in a bassinet or crib? Floor mats on their back are going to give them a flat head. |
You know you can bond, enjoy, and relax with your baby without endangering their life, right? Putting a baby down to sleep on a couch is a stupid and dangerous idea. Floor mat is okay but it’s far better for the baby to sleep in a proper bassinet or crib. |
| OP here -- I said couch to "hang out" not to sleep. if he's awake and doesn't want to be in his bassinet and i'm working on the couch...since everything else is off limits (swing, carseat, stroller) |
Engage and play with him on the floor or let him do tummy time. He should not be “hanging out” on the couch unless you have constant eyes on him. They learn to roll in an instant. Just get used to best practices, OP. |
| You should have childcare if you’re working, OP. |
do you know how much childcare costs in this country? |
| OMG |

Do you even know what SIDS is, OP? Your baby is not going to die from SIDS if you have him on the sofa next to you - he might suffocate if you're not paying attention and he rolls into the pillows, he might get hurt if he falls off the couch onto the floor, but neither of those is SIDS, it's parental negligence.
You can and should buy a play mat or put a blanket on the floor for your baby and, you know, pay attention to him. |
Yes because I have a nanny and work from home. |
