Nervous flying Alaska Air in a few weeks because of cancellations

Anonymous
Like the title says I’m flying Alaska Air in a few weeks with my two toddlers. They seem to be having a lot of cancellations. I booked last year pre Ukraine, fuel prices, inflation, etc. changing to another airline would be 1,000 ish for all three. I got trip insurance from the airline and used my Chase Sapphire Preferred card.

My question is what verbiage do I use to get us booked on a new flight asap, travel vouchers, hotel or food per diems if we are stranded in our layover city? If it was just me I could rough it or get a beer but my toddlers are a different story.

If it's due to weather, you are SOL. If there are cancellations due to mechanical, no flight crew, late aircraft, etc... Ask who they have reciprocity with and asked what other airlines you can get seats on for the destination city.

The most important thing you can do is get a printed proof of flight cancellation or delay. You can get that from a gate agent or at the ticket desk. If you can't get it immediately, that's fine, but getting it later will probably require a bit of work calling customer service.

Do whatever you need to do in terms of getting an Uber, booking hotel, food, whatever. Just be sure to save receipts. Afterward there is an online form to fill out to get reimbursed, and you will have to upload a bunch of documents- original reservation, credit card bill showing you paid for it with the card, the proof of delay/cancellation, and all the receipts. It's not that hard overall, you just need to make sure you have everything they ask for.

This walks you through it.

In the moment you really don't have to do anything special other than try and get the printed proof of delay/cancellation. If you can do it quickly it will help later.

For the rebooking, don't wait in line. Call and do it on the phone, or on Twitter. Look up available flights before calling and tell them what you want

Also the delay has to be 12 hours or overnight to use the Chase coverage.
