MAP tests in 9th grade. Should DC opt out?

MAP tests next week for our 9th grader via zoom. Should DC opt out? It seems pointless.

It is not needed for college application or anything. The school allows kids to opt out. Then your 9th grader doesn't need to take the tests, I guess.

No, just take them. Not a big deal.

They are a total waste of time for 9th Graders. If it is possible to opt out, go for it!

I don't think taking these 3 times a year, especially in addition to MCAP is necessary. Maybe once a year if you want to monitor growth; otherwise, opt out.

If you want you and your school to have an unbiased measure of how your kid is doing, have them try on the MAP tests. If you don't care, then don't. Grades obviously won't give you a clear pictures.

I'm assuming they are virtual and not all virtual kids do MCAP as the home schools have to allow it and not all do.

These MAP tests in 9th are an annoying state requirement to try to do a diagnostic for learning loss and recovery. Usually they stop at 8th. They are of no benefit to your child and the HS will not look at them. Do what you want!

HS science teacher here- in the past, I would say don’t bother. But post-pandemic, the data on student reading levels has been very spotty and out of date. I pull RIT scores for my classes to try to understand where each student is at and plan accordingly. It’s more useful than MCAP data is to me.

There is a benefit to kids who are struggling but not much of a benefit once kids are on a math track or english track that is higher.

You sound like very conscientious teachers, and I applaud you both!

Are they able to do them at home since it is via zoom?

MAP is done at home, MCAP is not.

Is this the first time they are offering the MAP tests in 9th grade?
