Stabbing near Gaithersburg HS today

Apparently 2 females were fighting each other and one stabbed the other. Not clear if they were students or not but it looks like it. Victim will be ok. Stabber is in custody.

Does anyone have a tally on the number of homicides in the past year have occurred in Germantown? Seems like 20 or more. In previous years, it would have been zero.

Other than the school email, do you have a link to a news source on this?

Isn't this just North of North Bethesda?

We are happy there. Please don’t let one incident shape opinion of the entire student body. Things have been better each year since we received a new principal.

Tasteless to make that type of comment in jest with this situation as the backdrop. Let me fix it for you: "My deepest condolences to the victim and their family. I have hope that they will pull through and fully recover. This type of violence is senseless and unnecessary as everyone has a basic right to feel safe at school. We must continue to invest in the root causes in order to prevent things like this from happening again, whether it's extra trusted adults to go to when conflicts/upsetting events arise (because they know a better way than the cultural "eye for an eye" or "snitches get stitches"), conflict resolution/restorative justice, reminding students of the long-term consequences of their actions, having parents/role-models proactively check in on how the day's going/letting them know they're not alone, etc."

I concur. This, unfortunately, isn't the only school where this has occurred and is a symptom of larger crises amongst youth. Dimmick has done a solid job - I know his son and daughter from my B-CC days, and I can say he's raised a stand-up family.

Here's more information:

We need the Clery Act for K-12, instead of just universities. MCPS made no public announcement about this, since it makes them look bad if they do.

Good idea. Violence is up across the county but it’s mostly up with teens. It’s not always in schools, but they are often beefs that spur retaliation at schools. I can find tons of demographic info on suspensions and arrests at schools, but nothing about the victims. How many students have been attacked? How many stabbed? How many shot at? How many actually shot? How old, what gender, what race?

MCPS doesn’t publish that anywhere.

Schools aren’t really allowed to talk about individual students due to privacy laws or police involvement. The press can. It’s not a conspiracy folks.
