I find that the darker red thinner cuts of wild salmon (usually the sockeye) tend to have a fishiness that I don't like. I generally buy Atlantic farm raised salmon. Sometimes it's delicious and sometimes it's fishy but I can't figure out why. Very rarely, I'll buy the wild salmon at WF that is light pink and $40 per pound. What would you recommend? |

My favorite salmon is the Trader Joe's farmed Atlantic salmon in the refrigerated section (not frozen). It's $10/lb and tastes like butter. I've never gotten any fishy flavor from it. And I am also someone who doesn't care for sockeye or most wild salmon because I find it to be stringy.

| The best is wild caught Alaskan king salmon but it’s very hard to get, expensive, and not great from a sustainability standpoint. For a while I was getting the Whole Foods Atlantic farmed salmon, which is raised fairly sustainably, but lately it’s been disappointing. Honestly, I’ve stopped eating much salmon. I’m with you on taste and it’s just hard to find salmon I like the taste of and can feel good about eating from a food ethics perspective. |
| Frozen wild Alaskan salmon from Costco is good buy. If you buy from the fish counter, it’s defrosted from frozen anyway. Unless you live in Alaska. |
This is what I buy. |
I’d like to flag this comment (not officially, but I think there are some factual errors). The Alaska salmon fishery is among the best managed in the world. The MSC has certified it as sustainable. The salmon fisheries support subsistence communities as well as commercial fisher people. So, from a ‘sustainability’ perspective, no, Alaskan king is not problematic. It would be if it was overfished. But it absolutely is not, at this time. And Farmed salmon, while improving in sustainability, is hugely problematic. Fish escape and spread diseases to other fish populations. The nutritional value of the fish is much lower than wild stock fish. Practices *are* improving but a typical fillet of wild Alaskan king is going to be healthier for you and the earth than a filet of farmed fish. Anyway: to OPs question… wild Alaska king tastes the nicest but it is expensive. I don’t eat farmed salmon. — Alaskan, with no stake in the fishing industry |
| Copper River. Short season though so not a year round option. |

Farmed salmon is ethically and nutritionally problematic.
I like Costco's frozen wild caught salmon. |
| We get the bag of frozen farmed salmon fillets from Whole Foods that is $20. Not fishy. Usually there are lots of them in the frozen food section. |
| Try arctic char if you haven’t, and can find it. Very similar to salmon (they’re related), not usually fishy. |
Copper river is sockeye. |
Copper River is a place. You can get Copper River King or Copper River Sockeye. CR King is the best of the best. |

What about Faroe Islands salmon? I can't figure out if it's farmed or not, but it seems to be 'better' than farmed Atlantic salmon. |
| Why would you eat salmon if you don’t like it, OP ? |
+100 Like buttah…
