MD Public Schools other than MCPS
| My husband and I are looking at homes in College Park/University Park. Or should I say we were until we just discovered that taxes on a $450,000 house are $9,500! What is up with this county? That's almost double MoCo, DC and Howard. How does anyone afford to live there? |
| Yeah, we were floored by the prohibitively high taxes in UP too.. At the time, it was 6K. We were looking more at the lower end of the housing stock there. I think b/c in both UP and CP you are paying county and municipal taxes. |

Well, there are more places in PG that are great to live that cost less.
One of the big secrets about PG is that our parks and rec services (that does a whole lot of summer camp) are absolutely outstanding. |
AMEN!! I am continually amazed at the quality of places and events I can take my kids to here. One thing about the property taxes -- I didn't realize they were higher than in other areas. But I know our houses are worth less... so if we had the same property tax funding our schools and public services, we would have a lot less money in the budget. So maybe the property tax rate needs to be higher to compensate for the fact that houses cost less here? And, I'm sure that $450,000 buys you a bigger house in University Park than it would many places in Montomery County or Fairfax, right? Our 3 BR house cost us $210,000 so even if we are paying more in property tax, I figure we have a good deal. |

Yes, houses are cheaper in UP than in MoCo, but the trade-off in much of MoCo is well-regarded schools. Hyattsville Middle is marginal at best and Northwestern would be out of the question for us. The science and tech program at Eleanor Roosevelt is good provided your kid's strengths will be math and science and provided he or she actually gets in.
I think one contributing factor for the high taxes would be their town police force..It's a pretty small town to suppport its own 24-hr police force. |
