| DS got a speeding ticket (41 in a 30) The officer recommended he go to court instead of paying the fine so there will be no points. Any idea what DS should expect? Will he need to speak about the incident or provide any background info (grades/extra curriculars/volunteering)? We're in MD if that matters. |
| I'm pretty sure he will still have to pay fines and gets the points. You go to court to contest the ticket. Which he will lose. Unless the officer doesn't show up to court, then the ticket gets dismissed. |
| Yes your only hope is the officer now showing up. Judges do not care about grades etc. If it is not dismissed you will pay court costs on top of the ticket and points. The points will be gone in 3 years. |
This. He cannot admit he was speeding, or the they will think he’s an idiot, and he will still have to pay the ticket plus fines. Maybe they will knock down some points. |
| He could argue the radar gun hasn't been calibrated in X number of months and, therefore, not credible. |
He will need to speak as to why he feels he was unjustly given a speeding ticket. |
| Go to traffic court, especially if it he got it in one of the smaller municipalities in Maryland. A lot of times they don't show up to court. |
| Wow! He wasn’t even gong that fast. |
I never had a case when the officer doesn’t show up and they dismiss the ticket |
This. It's why getting a traffic court lawyer is worthwhile. |
If you can reschedule, do it as many times as you can and hope that it ends up not being on the cop's court day |
It's too fast for a 17 year old inexperienced driver. I would make him pay the fine and take the points OP. He was speeding. Go the speed limit! Speeding kills other people all the time. It is honestly the worst thing a young driver can do. |
| If he knew he was speeding I disagree with arguing about the calibration of the radar gun. I'd let my own DS face the consequences. It will be worth it in the long run. There is always the option of signing up for (and paying in advance so you can prove to the judge that DS intends to follow through) a safe driving class. It's a win/win because the judge may be more lenient and DS will get a reminder about safety behind the wheel. |
Sometimes you don’t Even know the speed limit, the signs are hard to see. |
No it’s not it’s actually more dangerous for him to impede traffic |
