Screen time in elementary schools

Anonymous
My oldest went to FCPS before the pandemic. The last two years we have been at a private school. We are enrolled to come back (two kids) this fall.

I have heard a lot on other pages about screen time in FCPS.

How screen time is being done at your school and what grades?

I feel like the use of screens was overused even in spring 2020 but I am afraid maybe now FCPS never went back to normal based on what I have read in other parent groups.

Can you share how much screens are being used in elementary school? I want my kids doing normal homework using paper (writing these down physically retains more knowledge--multiple studies have been done on this.). Thanks.

I can confirm that FCPS didn’t go back to normal after virtual. Teachers are using their slide shows from last year, even in math. Normal homework is disappearing. I would stay in private.

This will vary by school and by teacher. My kid’s tech use is what it was pre pandemic. HW is paper pencil and instruction is paper pencil. Projects, research and certain applications are on computer. Certain tests are on computers. Teacher posts HW online if kid loses it or forgets but it is printable. I would say my student averages 10 percent-30 percent of day on a computer, depending on what they are doing. When they were doing research they used it more.

My second grader has mostly digital work (i.e. slides, typed submissions, etc) and little work on paper. Considering covid shut down schools for current second grade as Kindergarteners it is terrible. I really wish they would get these kids working on paper. They need it.

Same for my 5th grader. They even have math online. Its awful. I complained to the principal and he told me it was more earth friendly. I think its that they scanned in all their "teacher pay teachers" worksheets and its so much easier to not have to make copies or actually grade anything.

It's awful, OP. Laptops are now a crutch being used all day long. MY KIDS TOOK THEIR LAPTOPS TO PE.

I agree. Bull Run ES is terrible in both my childrens classrooms as far as laptop overuse.

My 3rd grader uses her laptop during math and occasionally to make slide shows for science or social studies. That's it. My kindergartener gets maybe 10-15 minutes two or three times a week to do ST Math or Imagine Learning.

Me again - they do math assessments on the computer. But she brings home math worksheets every day, so I know they use paper, too. Maybe ask your children to start bringing home the things they work on during the day - mine didn't until I started asking her to.

Stop it. It is cheaper than daycare. Also, I needed to work. There is no way I could have done virtual school with two grades with one being in kindergarten. I had to stay employed. I am divorced and ex and I coparent. Shut up.

I am the PP posting about my second grader and public school should be more than capable of giving K-2 kids (the ages I posted about specifically) education on paper more than on rare occasions. No way should that equate to “precious private school”.

Doesn't bother me one bit as a parent of a 2nd grader. The present and future are digital.
