Kolaches

Anyone know of a bakery in the area (preferably NOVA) that sells kolaches? I have been craving them lately and I am in no way capable of making something like that on my own (though, I did surprise myself recently by successfully making scones).

Do you mean the kolaches with sausage or the kolaches with fruit/cheese?

You're making me think of my childhood in Houston, TX, where breakfast kolaches were king. But that's nowhere near NoVa, ha ha. Republic Koloache was the only place I knew of and it was a victim of the pandemic.

My grandma used to make them from scratch for holidays.

My mom used to do a shortcut version using frozen bread roll dough and pie filling.

There’s a kolache place where we live, but it’s the Texas style, not the midwestern fruit/poppyseed/cheese ones that I grew up with.

Dairy Godmother in Del Ray was purchased by someone from Texas and they’ve expanded to also have Just Fine Donuts AND Kolaches most mornings. The kolaches are pretty legit but only the sausage/cheese/jalapeño variety AFAIK. Their apple fritters are also amazing and as big as your face. I’ve heard Texas Donuts (a few places around Nova) may also do kolaches, but I’ve never tried them since I live in Alexandria. The pictures look very different from the kolaches I had in central Texas. Just Fine are the yeast roll type I am familiar with. I miss the sweet variety of kolaches!

Texas Donuts has excellent Texas style donuts (very soft and fluffy) and the sausage style of kolaches, including cheddar and jalapeno as well as regular sausage.

I will check out Dairy Godmother and Texas Donuts! Maybe one day they'll start carrying the fruit kind.

There used to be an amazing kolache place at Union Market- they also sold to Zeke’s. But I think the pandemic took them out. They were Texas style, but they had sweet and savory with interesting flavors like strawberry balsamic.
You’re making me sad about them being gone all over again.

Colorado. Because every other car on the road here has a freaking Texas license plate. And they opened a Whataburger and the lines are ridiculous.

TX donuts is fantastic. It is as close to Shipley’s donuts as you will get here. The kolaches though are only sausage and cheese (or with jalapeños).

If you’re really desperate, Goldbelly will ship the fruit kolaches. They ship well!

OP here, I am going to try Texas Donuts! I definitely miss Shipley's as well.

I might try Goldbelly's, and I also found this recipe so I might try to actually make my own. I never thought I would be able to bake anything from scratch but as I mentioned in the OP I successfully made scones last weekend so maybe it's worth a shot!
