Would you ever have your child do an internship that they need to pay for?

My friend's DD was invited to do an internship at a well known college but it is a handful of zoom meetings, 2 weeks in a lab and $3500.

I suggested no. What do you think?

Is it an internship? What is the cost for?

My college student is doing a program this summer at another college and we had to pay for it - but they are getting faculty and classes and dorm living so it seems worth it.

It's not an internship - maybe just semantics but it's a program and it makes sense to pay for it. And its in person with faculty they have to pay.

No

Much better to get a summer job

It depends....My kid is going to Vet School and she needs 6000 animal hours in various senarios like large animal, small animal and exotics. So yes, I would pay so she can get a more competitive resume. That is sadly the way this field works. Many of the kids don't get in either first or second submit...just so competite...and their animal hours are not paid because all vets know this and they can hire a dime a dozen called shadowing for nothing.

Oh that's weired. My kid did summer research at Penn State (funded by National Science Foundation) and Penn State provided (via NSF) room and paid him for the summer (but no food).

No.

Maybe it covers the lab fees?

It's resume padding. If the program isn't high profile enough for outsiders to know it's just a paid line on a resume and the kid can spin it, I'd consider it if there weren't better options.

It's not an internship, OP. It's just a way for the college to siphon money from parents' wallets.

It depends on the situation but that's not an internship - that's a school program or camp. It sounds weird.

...wtf...no.
You gain experience, hopefully they pay you (I believe internships should be paid), they get assistance with gruntwork nobody wants to do.

that’s nuts. I understand needing to cover room and board, but an “internship” where you pay for the privilege of working isn’t really an internship.

I would consider letting my DD do unpaid internships in policy just because there's not a lot of funding there. But, no, I would never pay for the internship.

No, it is a scam (or, as a capitalist might describe it, a money maker).

Such “opportunities “ are not perceived as impressive because they are not competitive, and CV reviewers see them for what they are.
