Is undergrad degree enough or do you need an MBA?
Our best guys were usually PhDs in physics
Applied mathematics or physics.
Applied mathematics. Usually a master's or PhD.
MBA is not for quant. There are many ways one can become a quant but Physics, Math, Statistics, Engineering (CS, EE )naturally lead to that path AND MS in Financial Engineering or PhD is required. |
Quant can mean different things. What kind of job do you have in mind?
Math. Sounds horrible.
Economics if the school has strong mathematical/data analysis courses. Many Phd Economists go on to do quant work. (But there are undergrad programs that will teach lower levels of this).
PhD physicist here. Almost every quantitative trader I know (and I know a broad set of people in finance) is a physicist who specialized in some kind of computational modeling. I know one other person who is an aerospace engineer that specialized in computation fluid modeling (which is basically physics).
Yesterday's Quants are today's Data Scientists.
