Exactly how many lanes is 66 going to be in Fairfax?

Exactly how many lanes is 66 going to be in Fairfax? I live between Dunn Loring and Vienna and when I drive on 66 by my count I see possibly six lanes going westbound (4 in service, two being built at the center not open yet). I’m gonna assume five or six eastbound as well? So how many lanes total is the expanded i66 going to be? The transform 66 webpage is really unclear on final numbers and I’m trying to make sense of what I see driving every day.

The website is very clear: 2 express lanes plus 3 general lanes. There will be some additional lanes in certain spots for collector/distributor, acceleration / deceleration lanes etc

So all this disruption and only adding one lane?

What??? Prior to the construction it was either 2 or 3 lanes. It is now going to be 5. How is that only 1?

Prior to construction, I66 outside the beltway was 3 lanes that went to 4 when the "Red X" lane was activated during rush hour. It is only 2 lanes inside the beltway.

I'm pleased that they have been maintaining 4 lanes during the construction otherwise it would be a huge mess.

In all the decades I've lived outside the beltway, I have never known Rt. 66 not to be under construction. The extra lanes alleviate things for a year or two, until development accelerates and we're back to square 1. Widening Rt. 66 (or any other major arteries) has never been about helping traffic flow. It's all about helping developers. So for you newcomers, don't think this will help your commute (except maybe the express lane users).

That is per side. It’s going to be a 10 lane highway.

That’s correct. I think it’s a great change although I am annoyed that they are going to let trucks and semis use the express lanes (which they can’t do on the beltway express lanes)

Too many.
