What are some of your favorite songs to dance to at weddings?

I was at a wedding recently where the music was great. It had me thinking about what are some of the must have songs when planning a wedding that guests would enjoy to dance to?

I like this list but I could pass on Shout. I hate the song We Are Family. Maybe I associate with a cheesy commercial I think. I bet if you Google top 100 wedding dance songs, you’d get a good list. 80s hits always seem to be crowd pleasers.

I'm a millennial, but still love to dance to 70s music. Shake Your Groove Thing by Peaches and Herb is my favorite. Boogie Shoes was a big hit at our wedding.

C'mon N Ride the Train by Quad City DJs
Timber by Kesha

Gangnam Style brought the house down at our wedding when people were nice and buzzed -- but this was 2014 at its peak popularity.

Stevie Wonder is reliable across age groups. I like Superstition.

I think about the age of the couple and their friends, and what songs would bring back that high school/college nostalgia for them. All the homecoming/prom songs of the early 2000s have always brought my friend group to the dance floor at weddings. Playing those later in the evening, when the dance floor could easily die down, is key. The best DJs play the overall crowd pleasers early and gradually turn over to the songs the younger crowd will love.

Was at a “younger generation” wedding recently (25ish - we are in our 40s) and the dj switched to 2000s music pretty soon and the young people danced but the older folks all left. Sixties to eighties is just better crowd pleasers. All three generations know them all, and they’re easier to sing along and dance to. And if the young folks won’t dance to older music, that’s on them. Sixties music way predates my generation and we’ve always happily danced to it and had fun.

Back in 2004 at my wedding, I swear the band playing Johnny cash ring of fire brought down the house. Everyone in their 20-30s were loving it, as were the 50s-60s set.
