Sloped backyard - can it be fixed?

Anonymous
Interested in a house and the backyard is big but quite hilly, sloping down toward the house. We have young kids and would prefer a flatter yard for play. Is this something that can be fixed with regrading (by professional landscapers - we would not attempt on our own)? I don’t think doing so would impact the neighbors in the back from a water flow perspective, because they are higher up than us. Anyone done this before?

You can add in a retaining or sitting wall that allows you to flatten the area you want and keep the other part higher. Depending on certain factors, you may need to OK this with your county for storm drain/flood control.

This can be done, but it will probably require a retaining wall, and can get expensive (six figures) fast.

It's totally possible, depending on how steep the slope is, over what distance. May require minimal to extensive retaining walls. With lots of money most things are possible.

You can do anything (within reason from an engineering perspective). Look at the Hoover dam. It just gets expensive if you’re doing big projects.
The county may also have a say in anything that changes water table or run off.

If the hill is sloping towards the back of your house, then the retaining wall will make the flat part of the yard higher; right? I would only do this if sloping away from the house, not toward.

This. Of course it can be done. Just depends on slope, cost and your expectations
