I guess when we did our family planning about bought our home, etc...we didn't exactly budget properly...but part of it is my career has gotten more equity bumps than my husbands so I make more $$. (at times this frustrates me, but that is a different topic).
anyhow, we have 2 kids in daycare tallying, $3300 - LOVE our daycare. Mortage is $2900...no money left at end of month, especially with gas, groceries, parking in town, etc.... -- but not working is not an option for me since I make $35k more than hubby...and him staying home would stall any hopes we have of career growth for him. -- Just venting really. Are we the only ones in this boat ! ??? I wish we would have bought less of a home so we have $$ to save, i dont really even think the childcare is that expensive considering we and the the children are happy and safe and boils down to less than $9 an hour for each kid with meals and teachers are treated well. Sigh....just feels like we are going in circles sometimes, guess its just tough times and this too shall pass |
| WOW! That is a ton in child care. I have two in fulltime care, and am paying $380 a week, and the daycare facility is just awesome. |
| Nope. Just 1 kid here. |
Are you in DC? I have never heard of childcare even close to that cheap in this city. OP, we rent and can't afford to buy because of childcare costs ($2800/month_. |
| Ours is close ($2800 for daycare and $3100 for mortgage) and will exceed if we have a 3rd kid. I comfort myself with the thought that the daycare bills will become *much* less once our older one starts school. Though it does sound like you use a pretty pricey daycare, but IMHO high-quality daycare where you know your children are safe & happy is well worth it. |
| We'll be in the same boat when #2 arrives. Only a slightly smaller mortgage (2500). And I can't even say I wish we bought less house because, frankly, we couldn't survive in a smaller house. It's barely liveable as it is. I also make more than DH, but he has more growth potential and his career would stall if he stayed home. So no good advice, just that you're not alone. |
Just outside the city, but I drive further out to Bowie, where it is completely out of my way, but the care is affordable, and the quality is high. |
| Just another mom to say that you are not alone. Our daycare does not exceed our mortage but would with two kids. I also make alot more than hubby but he has more growth protential in the long run. So we just suck it up right now and hope that the long run gets shorter and shorter! |
| My childcare is more then my rent - 1 child! |

PP here - I forgot, I wanted to ask where this poster lives (how do you get the quote to print in blue, bwt???)
"WOW! That is a ton in child care. I have two in fulltime care, and am paying $380 a week, and the daycare facility is just awesome. " My daycare in Germantown is about $300 a week/per kid. I imagine it could be more in DC. $380 a week for 2 kids *has* to be far away. I have a gf that pays about $175 a week for full time but she lives in Fallston, MD near Belair and that is the BOON DOCKS. |
Hit quote at the top right of the dialog box. As stated, I put my kids in care in Bowie. |
| We pay $2400/month for two in DC which is indeed more then our mortgage. It was more then our mortgage in fact when it was just one kid too. That's the way it is around here I believe. |
|
we pay $1600/mo for one infant in downtown D.C., which is more than our mortgage, before our condo fee. (we work/live in D.C.)
sigh. don't know how we'd ever be able to afford another kid! |
| Close...our mortgage is $1600 (we both sold something when the market was high, had a large downpayment), and pay $1400 for our part-time nanny. There is something to say about having wonderful childcare-when you know your child are safe when you're not around, so I can understand paying more, especially for 2 children. Sounds like you have a great daycare and your children are happy! |
