Talking to your DC teachers after hours

Anonymous
If you see your DC at outside schools hours are we allowed to ask them a question re school work?
Anonymous
You’re “allowed” to, but they’ll secretly be annoyed.

Really depends on the teacher, context and issue.
Anonymous
No. Send an email.

Please don’t. If you see me at the mall or grocery store I’m not at work. A hi is all

+1 plus if you ask in a certain way, you can convey the question without pressure for an answer in the moment so the teacher can choose their response.

I suggest you go to the teacher’s house. Or write a letter.

You are certainly allowed to, but I hope you don’t. I already have a hard enough time balancing my work and home life. I’m always answering emails, grading papers, developing curriculum, etc. If I’m shopping, it’s the rare time I am not glued to a laptop. Please let me have that moment! I’m happiest if you say hello and then send me an email. I’ll take care of your need once I’m back in my home office.

I ran into my sons PE teacher at the grocery store. My son was with me. The teacher introduced himself to me and proceeded to have a conversation with me that amounted to a P/T conference.

I just wanted to pick up some bananas.

It really doesn’t bother me. I don’t see parents that often since I don’t live in the district and if I do and you want to talk I won’t care, as long as you aren’t rude or pushy. But in 24 years, I can’t think of a time this has happened. Most of the times I see parents they say hi and make a minute of small talk at the most and then we go on our way.

I would have been very bothered a lot by the thought of a parent talking to me outside of school when I was younger. Now that I know it never happens, the thought doesn’t stress me out. Don’t be that parent and try to wait for the teacher by their car to have an impromptu conference. All of us have heard horror stories.

Saying hi is fine. That’s the normal thing to do.

The PE Teacher rarely gets to have P/T conferences and was probably excited.
