| Our family is considering leaving FCPS system to go some where that has stricter Covid protocols in place. Any recs of places still testing or requiring masks? |
Masks are required for 10 days if close contact which happened. It’s not being enforced and had 7 unmasked in child’s class of 15. This is at a falsely claimed reputable DC private school. |
Masks are only required for 10 days for unvaccinated close contacts. |
| Now? Optional masks (strongly encouraged), vaccine mandate with only health exceptions, no testing, etc. |
At our school it’s 10 days masking with a test after day 5 if you are vaccinated, and 5 days quarantine, test and 5 days masking if you aren’t vaccinated. But close contact is working 3 feet for kids and 6 feet for adults for 15 minutes. It seems unlikely that a whole class of 15 would be considered close. Teachers don’t know who is a close contact. |
At my child’s school, it is required for all regardless for the 10 days. However, like I said, it’s not being enforced with exception of one teacher out of the 8 throughout the day. |
How would you know if the poster you responded to didn’t name the school? |

Ours is basically the CDC guidelines with weekly testing. Positive test means isolate at home for 5 days, return to school after 5 days if symptoms are better with masks for another 5 days. Eat outside or away from others. I don't know if it is different for unvaccinated - 98% of the upper school students are vaccinated.
There is no more contact tracing, so individuals are notifying their close contacts of a positive test. Close contacts are to wear masks for 10 days after last exposure. Our school is small and has a COVID-cautious population, so we have had very few positive cases. Most kids who tested positive wear KN95s or even N95s when they return to school and close contacts usually also wear KN95s. Students have changed masks from cloth or surgical to KN95s, N95s during surges (like over the holidays) this past year and the year before. Our school, like most others, did lift the mask mandate in February. Initially, there was only an occasional positive case, but there has been a small uptick in recent weeks. |
It's against the law to require masks in schools in Virginia. And, now that the CDC agrees that its not needed in areas of low transmission, I think most schools are not requiring masks. |
PP - Sorry for the confusion; I was referencing DC Health Guidance specifically. |
I was referring to DC Health Guidance for schools - I should have made that clear. Apologies. |
It's hard to imagine schools will continue weekly testing next year. Has any schools said they will? |
Is DC paying for testing for schools? In MA it's fully paid by the state. No reason to not take advantage |
The Governor of Virginia has no authority to prohibit private schools from requiring masks (just like he can’t ban dress codes or uniforms in independent schools). |
| Our northeast private school principal said she joins a call every week with other private school principals across the nation where they hear from covid experts. They were told last week to start planning for a fall/winter covid surge 2022/2023 |
