Good APS MS for writing?

Anonymous
Which APS middle school has good writing teachers? I'm not seeing much grammar being taught at our ES.

I think you’ll be better off asking about tutors. DC goes to the “best” MS here, HBW, and the writing instruction isn’t great.

All the APS MS use the same writing curriculum. However they all do do is much more on grammar than the ES schools. Middle and HS use a program called No Red Ink for grammar. There is also a creative writing elective at most middle and high schools but your child has to want to take it.

Is HB considered the best? Honestly, I haven’t heard great things about HB.

Go private or get tutors if you want your kids to learn to write.

Yes

Far and away. The other middle schools are by design holding pens for kids to get thru puberty — at the intro night they tell you essentially there won’t be much emphasis on academics, just emotional development

NP with a kid heading into APS middle school. I didn’t grow up with tutors unless you were failing. What am I looking for in a tutor?

Get real. It's the same curriculum OP and not much different. It's just a self-selected group in a really nice building and much smaller. Which has a lot of pluses.

APS MS and HS are abysmal at teaching kids how to write.

My son finally learned grammar plus how to write and spell when we switched him to Catholic school.

before hiring a tutor, try the home school youtube vidoes. I watched few with DC when helping with homework in private school.

I'm the HB parent here, and this is why I put "best" in quotes. It is great, obviously, but it's still a public school with a public school curriculum and writing instruction is mediocre at best. So if the school that has a waiting list a mile long doesn't have a great writing curriculum, OP is unlikely to find an APS middle school that has a writing curriculum she'll be happy with.

But it's not like I've tested them all out, this is just my perspective.

One thing to consider, OP, is that teachers matter, and there are good teachers at every school. DD is advanced and her teachers have given her more advanced writing assignments, and I'm sure many teachers would do the same if your kid asks for it. But still, it's not like middle school teachers are sitting down one-on one with your kid to go over their weekly writing assignment that is grounded in rigorous content and giving quality critiques. You might get that in high school though.
