Anyone else experiencing this? My (normally) very strong student (3.9uw/4.4w) is just done with school. Will likely have Bs and B- (maybe a C+) in everything this term....

I don't particularly care about the grades but I worry a bit about the total lack of caring.

Did your child get into great schools? Is so, who cares. Let him be as long as he graduates.

Same with my kid. Exhausted. Don't blame her a bit. I tell her to relax a little. It's been a long f*ing year.

OP, here.

As I said, I don't really care about the grades...it's more the total and complete lack of motivation/caring. Lots of missing assignments.

OP I think it's normal--many, many kids have this. I think it's healthy, in fact...they are disengaging from their current life as they imagine themselves in their new college life. My good friend's A student (2021) was suddenly struggling to not get a D+ in physics.

My similarly situated DC was the opposite. She was totally obsessed with keeping grades up right through graduation. However; she was ignoring the college onboarding activities and hadn't even explored the college website. It didn't help that every damn thing was online. By April or May last year, I was completely freaking out. If I didn't check her college emails, she wouldn't have known there were deadlines for all sorts of things including placement tests and choosing classes. I became convinced that she was going to not launch.

After graduation, she turned her attention to college onboarding and all worked out well.

So, just telling you the flip side. It will be okay.

It hit my kid HARD. Normally solid B kid has two Cs and a D.

These kids have probably never had a moment in high school where they don’t have to worry about an expectation. I think it is pretty normal to want a little stress-free time now that they are in college and know they will be back at it again next fall, within reason - which Bs and Cs feel to me. As long as they are following house rules and refraining from anything that could jeopardize their admissions, I wouldn’t worry too much.

This doesn’t sound at all normal to me. I’d be concerned that the malaise might spill over into college. Self driven students usually have one gear and it revs pretty fast. Good luck!

I promise that this is very normal whether or not your kid had a rough time with college acceptances. Senioritis has been around a long time.

I told my senior just try to keep your grades decent for the last quarter. Try to finish somewhat strong. As and Bs. No problem is there are more Bs. She's tired. I don't blame her for letting a few parts fall off her car right now. We have turned high school into an arms race. The stress modern society puts on these kids to achieve is unreal. I was exhausted watching her do high school. It is no fun anymore.

Totally normal!
