| Here’s a new one on me- friend just casually mentioned that they “always” tip the student guides who give college tours. Im on my third kid going through the admissions process and we’ve never done or even heard of this. Friend said they buy a stack of gift cards for this purpose. Really?? |
| Don’t do this |
| Good god, no. |
| never heard of this.. |
| That’s just vulgar. |
| NO |
|
Op here. Further, friend said that the guides never seem surprised, so she infers that they are used to it.
Agree, very strange. |
| Some universities don’t pay their tour guides. |
| I was an unpaid student tour guide at UNC-Chapel Hill for 2 years. Never was offered anything and would have thought it bizarre. Fwiw, the admissions office never asked me for feedback either. |
| Good heavens don’t do this! |
| Wtf no!! |
| Nooooooo |
|
I did tip college tour guides in Europe (there was even a sign encouraging it)

We saw a family try to do this at a tour of a big state school. The tour guide kindly said ‘Oh, no thank you. That’s not necessary and I’m not allowed to accept that. But thanks so much. ’.
Soon after, we found out it was her solo first tour ever (she was awesome) so then I was even more impressed by how she handled it. It was a cringy move, very awkward to observe (but honestly, with all good intentions from the tipper, just clueless ) |
| No, cringe. |
