Spend college money on private high school instead?

We do not have a lot of money and we are also divorced so we may have had more if we were still together
I don’t even know if my child would get into a private high school (which would be 10th grade fall 2023)
I was also hoping to get financial aid and our payment would be at most 10k per year
We do not have college savings but we plan to help as much as possible with payments
For both our kids

So I am wondering if we should try to put that money towards high school and worry about college later

We live in DC proper

If you can only spend $10k/year, unless you already have that amount saved for college, do not spend it on private high school.

Enrolled in a private high school right now in DC and will leave after this year is up. Not getting our money’s worth.

If your total college fund is only $40,000 (10,000 x 4), that means your child is going to community college first while living at home.

Unless child is having significant problems, save the money and stay in public.

OP here
I have not looked at any schools yet
But I was thinking catholic because they
tend to be cheaper

I was hoping for college there may be some merit scholarships
Financial aid and then have him take out a loan that we would help pay back

And no significant problems just the state of DC high schools

What high school are you zoned for? You will be very, very hard pressed to find a college that is under $10,000/year total in tuition.

idk how high stats your kid is, but if he/she is high stat, look for schools with guaranteed merit money. they aren't DCUM worthy, but i know plenty of kids who are doing great who went to this type of school.

There’s only a limited amount of loans he can take out. You cannot afford it and you have no guarantee of scholarships or merit aid. I cannot even wrap my mind around why you would be entertaining this for a kid who is doing fine.
