Spironolactone and Irregular Periods?

| I am 43 and on 100mg daily of spironolactone to combat hair loss. So far I love spiro and have no problems with it. I only started it about three weeks ago and this month I got a double period. Has anyone else experienced this? I am super regular post-kids and am never early or late, so always like clockwork, but this month after starting sprio, I got my period two weeks early. I read that this is normal, but I'm surprised this type of irregularity would kick in this early just a few weeks after starting this. I'm hoping this isn't a new thing because it's annoying and I don't want a period every two weeks. My derm put me on this and noted the possibility of irregularity but I was thinking it would cause a late or skipped period, not an extra period. ugh. Should I let my ob/gyn know or give it some more time to see how this goes? I know irregularity can be a sign of other things, but this isn't just spotting--it's like an early period and seems connected to having started this medicine. |

| Huh this is interesting to me. I’ve been on spiro on and off throughout my adult life and have never had this issue. My issue was that it takes a few months for it to fully “work” for me. I’ve gone off it to have kids, etc. Never heard of this, though. |

| I had side effects with spironactone — made my breasts swell up painfully — and they kicked in within the first month. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a connection. It is a commonly used drug, but the side effects are very real. |

I’ve been thinking about going on it for hair loss and my derm did say irregular/more frequent periods are a side effect.
OP has it helped prevent further hair loss? It doesn’t grow hair back, right? Does it change your hair in any way? Do you combine it with anything to regrow lost hair? |

| OP here--I googled and it seems like the more frequent periods is a common occurrence on this drug. argh. i'll have to see how this goes. I've only been on it 3 weeks, but I am doing this in combination with taking nutrafol vitamins (have been on those for over a year and they help) and doing PRP therapy. My hair loss is hereditary. It runs in my family unfortunately and I'm just trying to hold onto what I have. TBH I should have started spiro a long time ago or at least 7 years ago after my 2nd child, but I just didn't think about it. Then the hair loss really accelerated during the pandemic prob due to stress and now I'm trying to play catch up. What I think has helped future hair loss is PRP. My hair stopped falling out immediately after I began that. Nutra seemed to help strengthen the hair but I was still having loss even when taking it. But so far on spiro my hair has felt very strong. no shedding or loss at all. I'm not expecting regrowth with it. Also, I don't have acne or skin issues, but my skin has felt super smooth since starting it. Almost glowing. Not sure if that's my imagination or the spiro. |

| I am on Spiro and my period is regular, no real change although my cycles are a little shorter than average. Spiro has gotten rid of a lot of pms symptoms. |

| Ive had really good results from Spiro and Rogaine. But, yes, it made my periods irregular. Like you, I could have set a clock by them, but now they are lighter and less predictable. It stressed me out at first, but it’s a small price to pay to stop pulling clumps of hair from the drain. |

| I am on 100 mg per day too and my periods, which were previously very long and heavy, consist of just spotting. And, they were more frequent too. I first chalked it up to perimenopause, but when I went off of the spiro for a few months, the heavy, long periods came back. |

It actually regrew most of the hair I lost. |
