DS is in Kindergarten in a SN private school. He has some speech delay and adhd, but no behavior issues of any sort.
Anywhere we can find some after-school enrichment class for DS to interact with neurotypical kids? Most private schools in MoCo have enrichment classes but I'm not sure if those classes are open to outside students. Any input is much appreciated. |
| Like flex? Call the school and ask. I think so. After care also isn’t run by the school. I’d just sign up for camps, though, if the goal is interaction with NT peers. Many of those activities are very structured and there’s not a ton of down social time. |
| Find after school activities not connected to a school. That would be a lousy social experience for your kid anyway. What kinds of things does your child enjoy? |
|
Imagination Stage has a great inclusion program.
Agree to find things not connected to a school. |
| These are all paid programs. Most schools run after school enrichment that's open to all, but they are mostly expensive. |
|
In ES, the PTA's run the after school programs and they are all paid programs.
You can try the parks department and recreation department. |
| I would call the principal for your home school. The issue is access to the property and open space in the program. |

After school programs at our neighborhood elementary often have kids from other, specialized, programs. So, a kid in language immersion or a GTLD program will take the bus back to the home school and do an after-school club or aftercare at the home school.
It's different because it is all within MCPS, but maybe look at that option? Otherwise, just enroll in something in the neighborhood that neighborhood kids tend to do. If you share a vague description of the area, we might be able to help identify the "it" program for the area. For example, if you are in Takoma Park, close-in Silver Spring, or Takoma DC, all of the neighborhood kids that age do Takoma Soccer. I'm sure there is something similar in other neighborhoods. |
OP here. I will check out Flex. Could you elaborate on camps? Any examples? We are close to Rockville / Bethesda / Potomac / Kensington / Chevy Chase area. |
OP here. I think DS is not too picky as a Kindergartener. Art, music, sports, or even math. You mean activities connected to a school is a lousy social experience (since DS is not attending that school), right? |
Thank you. Given the name (Imagination Stage), are most classes there about acting and theater performance? Although DS is not picky on the subjects of the enrichment classes, I would be reluctant to sign him up for acting class given his speech delay. Art, music, sports, and most other subjects are fine. |
OP. I got the impression that most enrichment classes from private schools are only open to their students. Maybe I'm wrong. |
Yep. But there isn’t a performance - just class with peers and a teacher. Depending on the nature of the delay, it might be particularly helpful by Rico Tung language, teaching dialogue patterns (I talk then you talk), etc. |
Got it. Will check out our local school PTA and parks/recreation dept. Thank you. |
PP back to fix typo. |
