ASAP Tick Testing Needed URGENT

Anonymous
Just found tick attached to 7 year old daughters ear. We don't know how long it was attached. She has a 1-2mm bruise on her ear now. We did save the tick, it is alive. We put it in a bag in the fridge. Please I need to know ASAP where I can take this tick to get tested for lyme disease and what ever other diseases it can carry.

Does anyone know of reputable lab that does this?

The people at urgent care or in ER will know. But you must treat with antibiotics. By the time you get results back from lab- your window of time to treat will be closed.

I was told you have to mail to someplace in New England. If you don’t get a good answer here tonight, call doc in the morning. Or Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. I heard they have one of the best Lyme disease research programs.

Fairfax county has a tick clinic and I’ve known people that drove ticks to them …. Try googling it

I think you can actually take the tick to their Sterling location for testing/identification or mail it to them. We did this about 2 years ago and got a quick response. You can also send them a picture to identify what kind of tick it is. We tried this first and they got back to us right away. I just wasn’t able to get a good enough picture so we sent it in.

When mine had a tick on the ear, the pediatrician said we didn't have to do antibiotics or get it tested but if we wanted to (we didn't), this was the place: https://www.tickcheck.com/

Are you sure it's a type that carries Lyme disease? Ours was a dog tick, which doesn't carry Lyme disease. We did have a better guess on length of time it had been attached than you do, though, based on where we had been.

She is 7 so i am worried about doxy as can discolor her teeth , per uptodate its the only one that can be given. There are many websites claiming they test ticks but I am worried as to how valid the test results are. i just called ER they dont do telehealth nor offer advice, Ill call ped first thing in AM and also fairfax County Health Dept.

PM Pediatrics does do telehealth until midnight if you want that and have the child with you. https://pmpediatrics.com/pmpanywhere/

thank you for this! i actually texted the number and they said it is an adult deer tick female. They seem to only test for Lyme, i see other places test for other illnesses too, I am now confused as to what to do...

Definitely get it tested. We did doxy for my seven year old when tick was confirmed positive for Lyme. It’s not something to mess around with.

I used tickreport.com

It’s scary but the good thing is that you have the tick and caught it early so you can treat.

Was the tick engorged? Just watch the spot for redness and watch for fever, etc. Lots of deer ticks out there; you can't do antibiotics for every tick bite.

Our pediatrician and the adult doctors we see won't treat without symptoms anyway.

OP here. Seeing ped this morning via tele-health, really hope they are willing to RX prophylacticly if tick positive. Still debating between testing in Sterling Elisa-only Lyme or sending to the tickreport in Mass-given its Friday--will not get back in less than 72 hours.
