FedEx/USPS/UPS "attempted delivery"

Anonymous
Multiple times since the start of this year I have had a package coming to me that the driver supposedly "attempted" to deliver but in fact they did not. I work from home and am super careful to be home during the day when a package is coming. The latest culprit is FedEx who "attempted" to deliver a package 3 days in a row. I finally had it delivered to a pickup location so I could get it myself.

Is anyone else experiencing this? It has happened with UPS (once) and USPS (twice) and now FedEx (three times). In fact I saw the FedEx trucked parked outside on the day of the third "attempted" delivery - I didn't want to bother the driver, who I assumed was busy at work, and since I saw him parked outside I figured it would be a matter of time before he got to my door. The next thing I know I got a text saying they attempted delivery for the third and final time.

On the one hand I get it - I'd like to get paid to pretend to work and then force someone into doing my job for me. On the other hand, this never used to happen and I am paying for shipping costs to have something delivered to my door. Is this happening to anyone else?

I've generally had good experiences with USPS and UPS, and the one time each of them has "attempted delivery" and it hasn't come, it got to me the next day. FedEx's DC operation, by contrast, is utter and absolute trash. I don't know if it's theft, laziness, incompetence, or some combination thereof, but I have had them fail to deliver or misdeliver so many packages now that I won't allow them to be chosen as a shipping option, and if a company only uses FedEx, I won't do business with them. If you pester the FedEx customer support enough on the phone, there's a number they will give you or try to call themselves for the DC warehouse, but that phone just rings off the hook (both for us AND for the other FexEx employees). Nobody answers it. Don't bother shipping with FedEx.*

*Note, this is specifically referring to FedEx Ground. FedEx courier services are run in a different way, and I've only had sporadic problems with them.

Same here. I work from home also, I know he/ she didn't attempt to deliver today because I have a camera as my proof. Amazon fresh is always on point every week.

FedEx is also the only company I’ve ever had try to pull this faux “attempted delivery” nonsense. Customer service didn’t seem surprised at all when I called and said I had been working from home waiting for the package and even checked my Ring camera for the time of the alleged delivery attempt. I was like well one of your drivers is clearly lying, isn’t this concerning? And basically they were like we’ll re-request delivery. They probably deal with this so much they think it’s NBD. I will go out of my way not to use FedEx around here. The WORST.

The dirty little secret of FedEx is that they don’t actually run their own routes. Contractors with their own trucks do the deliveries, and the drivers are employees of the contractors. “FedEx” just gets the packages to the distribution centers. Who knows how much control the company has over the drivers?

This happened to me when I lived in an apartment with an exterior entrance and shared stairwell (only 3 units). Once after a bunch of failed deliveries I actually managed to run down to intercept the driver and said "hey, I'm home! Why didn't you ring the bell?" And he said "How am I supposed to know which bell to ring?" I said "the one that says #3, my address says apartment 3 on the package, that is my unit number." He said "But it doesn't say your name, so how could I be sure?" (This wasn't a situation where there were name plates next to the other bells. Just 3 that were labeled 1, 2, and 3. He literally never even tried #3.)

FedEx is awful and UPS is getting there. Customer service at all 3 is worthless.

Yup. I've had far more of this with crappy USPS (they clearly have no business taking on the delivery of Amazon packages and are in WAY over their heads) but, same issues and same results. If not a false delivery attempt, it'll be driver marking that they "couldn't reach the front door" for literally no reason (other than they wanted to get home sooner), but the companies absolutely do not care that some of their drivers cheat.

This happened to us with USPS. I was home when they supposedly tried to delivery. My wife was out and called me to say she just received a texted or she checked the tracking and it said delivery attempted, no one home. I jumped on my bicycle and rode our neighborhood until I found the USPS driver. I informed her I was home and wanted to know why the delivery wasn’t made. Her response was the package was two big for her truck and we needed to come to the post office to pick up the shipment. Now we had paid for delivery. My wife refused to go to the post office. She ended up calling someone at post office and the delivery was finally made about 5 days after the initial attempted delivery.
