Still Confused by how Waitlist Number Works

Anonymous
I thought I had a decent grasp of how the school lottery works, but I’m still confused by the way the waitlist works. Our numbers have gotten worse at a couple of the schools we are waitlisted for for pre-K 3 in the last week. For instance we were 27 at Marie Reed (with no preferences) and now we are 30. I don’t full get how this happens. I thought that all the siblings, proximity, and other preferences were already above us? If that’s the case, why does are number keep getting worse?

The sibling preference isn’t stagnant. Sibling #1 decides to enroll so sibling #2 gets bumped up on the WL.

Or sibling #1 gets matched from the WL and enrolls, then sibling #2 gets preference.

Alternatively, family moves, establishes residency for IB school, kid gets IB preference.

Or parents decide their IB isn't "good enough" until they don't get in elsewhere and add it as a post-lottery add.

where do you actually go to see how your waitlist number has changed? we are waitlisted at Basis.

It should be updated on your MySchools account.
