Washington College

This is one I don't see discussed much here. DC would be a bio (or something similar) for pre-professional path. I get that most here won't think it is "elite" but it seems a solid school. Looks like strong STEM programs, with research/intern options. Close to the DMV. Near the beach.

Any thoughts or experiences?

I visited with my kid and I liked it - more than she liked it. She didn’t end up applying.

How is its financial stability?

We went to an open house last Fall for DD and she liked it. It has a really strong environmental science program and participates in a 3-2 master's program with Duke along with some more selective SLACs. I looked into finances and it seems in a good position.

80s alum here.

Like most SLACs, the college has been hand-to-mouth financially for the last few years, but they are now on a good path and their endowment is impressive for such a small school.

As noted above, the college is particularly strong in environmental sciences, with a brand new riverfront facility and a large farm used for ornithological studies. The English department is highly respected and the college awards the Sophie Kerr Prize to the senior showing the most promise in the literary field. It’s the largest undergraduate award in the country - over $60k.

Chestertown is about 45 minutes from Annapolis and a little over an hour to Baltimore if you need retail therapy, but it’s a charming town with plenty to do.

Thanks for this. How do you find the information re: endowments?

Sounds like the private version of SMCM. I see a lot of similarities.

FYI the common app has no supplementals for this school but after you apply there are essays to complete. This isn’t disclosed until you apply.
