I am in Fairfax County but it looks like several of the local counties are under a frost advisory for tonight.
Should we put protections around our hydrangeas and other blooming plants that don’t like the frost? |
| Yes |
| Anything tender, yes, like annuals or herbs you might have bought. I wouldn’t worry about a hydrangea, though - if the foliage that has come out gets nipped it will put out more soon. It won’t prevent bloom. Most of the things actually blooming now should be fine with the exception of camellias - it’s possible the frost will turn their flowers brown. But daffodils, tulips, other bulbs, creeping phlox…all fine with a little frost. |
I covered my hydrangeas last week when we had that cold snap, and all of the green buds turned brown
I am tempted to do nothing tonight. |
The green buds are just foliage, not flowers. The plant will grow more! |
| If you recently planted annuals just drape a sheet or towel over them. Perrenials and shrubs should be fine. |
| Hydrangeas are hardy. |
